Views from a Train Window.
Photography Ken Abbott
There is something endlessly fascinating about watching the world go by through the
window of a moving train. The view it gives is unique, and the perspective it offers is
unlike any other. The landscape unfolds as a continuous sequence of decisive
moments, whilst the dimension of speed turns the familiar into something altogether
different.
Somewhere in England is an exhibition of photography by Ken Abbott that explores this
unique way of seeing the world. Some images embrace the energy and abstraction
created by movement, while others form a documentary record of passing places.
Between March and June, Ken travelled nearly 2000 miles around England on 46 trains,
passing through 474 stations camera in hand, photographing the ever-changing scene
passing by the window.
This exhibition brings together the most evocative images from those journeys, offering
a unique perspective on England in 2026
Ken is a documentary photographer based in Portishead near Bristol and this is his
7th exhibition. Previous ones include Beyond the Stage, a look at what goes on
behind the scenes at the theatre, Volunteers, which concentrated on those who give
their time helping the homeless and No Borders Here, a series of portraits of
immigrants who have made their homes in Bristol.
He intends Somewhere in England to be the first in a series of projects that look at
the world through moving windows, as well as turning this project into a book.
