Weston Artspace: Weston Super Shop Windows: Artist Commission

Exciting paid commission - Weston Artspace is looking for local creatives to produce new artwork in the windows of Weston-super-Mare High Street and the surrounding shopping areas to bring colour, creativity and vibrancy to the town in February 2021. We want to create a striking temporary display that is easy to walk around and which will celebrate our town, encourage people to visit the town centre and showcase some of the incredible talent in our local creative community.

Please get your application to us by the deadline of Friday 22nd January.

The Brief

We are looking to commission 6 artists to transform selected shop windows into wonderful works of art to be unveiled on the last weekend of the February half-term. It is hoped that this will dovetail with a wider community window art trail currently being researched by Culture Weston.

We want you to design, make and install a visual arts-based installation that brings to life a shop window on the High Street or surrounding shopping areas. This will either be in an empty shop or an existing business, and you will be matched to the shop depending on your ideas and proposal. The installation needs to be:

Visually exciting and of a high quality. We encourage you to be artistically adventurous and to let your imagination run wild. The installation can be in any media and we welcome submissions from anyone whether you are a visual artist, photographer, designer, sculptor, writer, or any other kind of creative.

The finished installation should be visually striking enough to capture interest and work in the daytime but should also work in the evening when it will be illuminated by the lighting of the host shop.

The finished window display should be suitable for a family audience.

If you are allocated a window in a shop occupied by a business rather than an empty shop, you will need to agree your final design with the business owner. We will help support you with this process.

Your design needs to be durable and stable enough to stay in place for the agreed timescale of the project. (this might be negotiable depending on which window you are allocated.)

The Theme

‘A Ray of Light’ – we want to send out a positive message about your hopes for 2021. This theme can be interpreted how you like and could just be something colourful that brings a little bit of happiness after a difficult year.
