Government-backed Start-up & Development Loans: Personal loans for business purposes

A Start Up Loan is a government-backed personal loan available to individuals looking to start or grow a business in the UK.

In addition to finance, successful applicants receive 12 months of free mentoring and exclusive business offers to help them succeed.

The loan is unsecured, so there’s no need to put forward any assets or guarantors to support an application.

The Start Up Loans Company was established in September 2012, with a mission to help new and early stage UK businesses access affordable finance and mentoring support.

All owners or partners in a business can individually apply for up to £25,000 each, with a maximum of £100,000 available per business.

We will provide free templates and can personally help you create your Business Plan, Cash Flow Forecast and Personal Survival Budget to submit with your application.

If approved, you will be paired with a mentor for 12-months of free mentoring.

We’re a subsidiary of the British Business Bank and deliver the Government’s Start Up Loans programme providing finance and support for businesses who struggle to access other forms of finance.

We work with a national network of Delivery Partners who are based across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In addition to helping applicants prepare their business plan and cash flow forecast, our Delivery Partners are responsible for assessing final applications and providing ongoing mentoring support to successful applicants.

We also work with two Finance Partners, Street UK Limited and The Enterprise Loan Fund Ltd (trading as Business Finance Solutions), who are responsible for administering the loan agreements and funds to successful applicants (and are both regulated by the FCA). Our Finance Partners are the key point of contact for any matters relating to loan administration and repayments. Delivery Partners do not get involved at this level once the loan has been granted.

All of our Delivery Partners and Finance Partners are closely monitored by The Start Up Loans Company to deliver a consistent approach to supporting applicants and ensure responsible lending decisions are made across the network.
