St George Community Centre: Artist Commission

Expressions of Interest are invited to create ‘A Welcome Arch’ between St George Park and the St George Community Centre Garden. The entrance will be used by members of the public to access the centre, enter the park or travel to and from Church Road. It should be suitable for all ages and abilities to safely travel through unhindered. The Community centre side of the artwork could be used for independent exploration and creative play by groups of under-fives who use the community garden in good weather. It should signpost and showcase the community centre and its purpose.

The successful artist/designer/maker will create the artwork, considering assembly, weathering, safety and durability.

The commissioning panel is looking for a design that:

  • Will become a symbol of ‘togetherness’ for the community of St George
  • Uses quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and has exceptional production values
  • Integrates, or has the potential to integrate different textures
  • Is safe, strong and durable
  • Fits with the Community Association’s policy to minimise our impact on the environment and support local businesses.

Total commission value including all fees, materials, fabrication and installation as required: £4,500.00

Background: The St George Community Centre is a communal space available to hire to the residents of St George and the home to various local activities. The centre is run by the St George Community Association, which was set up in 1987 by a group of local residents. Today the centre is kept running by a small group of volunteers with a part-time administrator.

Sadly, the Community Centre is currently closed and will remain so until the Government directs that people can meet again for social activities. We would like the Welcome Arch to be in place for this time and to be the focus of celebrations of our reopening and our community’s endurance through these difficult times.
