Braziers Park is a community, a residential college and an architectural treasure hidden deep in the South Oxfordshire countryside. It was founded in 1950 as an educational trust, and is a continuing experiment in the advantages and problems of living in a group. Braziers has a long, fascinating history of counter-cultural activity spanning decades – with John Latham and R.D. Laing to Marianne Faithfull (and Mick Jagger) spending time there. Community members share responsibility for running the mansion house (a Grade II* listed building), 55 acres of land, organic kitchen garden and livestock and facilitating courses/organising events.

SUPERNORMAL is one of the UK’s leading experimental arts and music festivals, held at Braziers Park in Oxfordshire every August. It derives from the unique social history of Braziers Park, and offers an alternative for those who feel disenfranchised by corporate, profit-led festivals. It showcases the best of DIY, experimental practice and creates a supportive and empowering space for artists and audiences to explore creativity in a spontaneous and meaningful way. Supernormal evolved out of the annual Braziers International Artists’ Workshop (BIAW), an artist-led series of workshops and events which took place at Braziers Park from 1995–2010.

Residency objectives

This week-long residency is an opportunity for participating artists to try something new. It will offer a space for participants to engage with the community at Braziers Park and explore its rich history. The residency will also be an environment for creative experimentation, in which new conversations can take place, ideas can be developed and supported, and leaps of imagination can occur.

Accommodation and further information

Individual rooms will be provided in the house at Braziers Park. All meals will be provided. Artists will attend communal meals and will contribute to/support the community by helping out with kitchen/house duties. There is a £500 artist fee for participation in the residency and a further £500 for the development and presentation of work at Supernormal 2019. Costs for travel for both the residency and the festival can be covered for up to £85 per person.

Venue accessibility, Braziers house

There is no accommodation or accessible bathrooms on the ground floor of the house, so this residency would be unsuitable for anyone who cannot negotiate stairs to the first floor. Both sets of stairs in the house only have a handrail on one side.
