Bristol Museums Development Trust: Expressions of interest sought for trustee positions

Do you feel passionately about Bristol’s culture, heritage or natural environment?  Bristol Museums Development Trust, an independent charity (RCN 1137777) that supports Bristol Museums and Bristol Archives, is seeking expressions of interest for voluntary trustee roles.

Flagship museums M Shed and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery are part of a wider group of seven visitor sites that includes three historic houses - The Georgian House Museum, The Red Lodge Museum, and Blaise Castle House Museum - as well as Bristol Archives and King’s Weston Roman Villa. Together, they form Bristol Museums and Archives, which is part of Bristol City Council’s Bristol Culture team. Bristol Museums is the most visited free visitor attraction in the South West with over 1 million visitors a year.

As a Board member, you will work closely with senior staff at Bristol Culture to help maximise its potential as Bristol’s foremost heritage and cultural institution.  You will also be taken on a personal voyage of discovery into the extraordinary collections and archives. With over 1.75 million objects, across three main collecting areas of art, people, and the world, there’s something for everyone. You will also find out how Bristol’s diverse local communities play a major role in Bristol Museums and Bristol Archives.

You’ll use your strong networking skills to help spread the word among private individuals, trustees of charitable foundations and Bristol’s business community about the wealth of opportunities for them to support Bristol’s culture, heritage and natural environment.  At Board meetings you will make decisions on how unrestricted donations from visitors are allocated across Bristol Museums, giving you greater insight into how museums and archives operate.

The time commitment is quarterly Board meetings, plus attendance at private views and other exclusive events such as corporate receptions and other special events.  Reasonable travel expenses are paid.

If you have a passion for Bristol’s heritage, culture or its natural environment, strong networking skills and a willingness to develop relationships to help secure funding from private individuals, trusts, and companies, please get in touch.  One of the following is also desirable:

  • Experience of being a trustee,  non-executive or senior manager
  • Legal or fundraising expertise
  • Involvement in the cultural,  education or community sectors (professional or voluntary)
  • An understanding of how local/national policy-making affects Bristol’s heritage and culture

To find out more, please contact our retained search consultant Sandy Hinks at Moon Consulting via recruit@moonconsulting.co.uk or call 01275 371200 quoting reference MC 01968.  A copy of your CV and no more than two sides of A4 expression of interest will be required. If specific Bristol Museums’ collections, archives or visitor sites especially inspire you, please mention that in your application.
