Ria Burns: Natural Yarn Dyeing with British Wool (Online Workshop)

Thu, 10/09/2020 - Thu, 24/09/2020

An online introduction to natural yarn dyeing with British Wool - with the option to purchase the yarns used by Ria in the workshop to try at home.

An overview of the techniques and methods of natural yarn dyeing, and the vibrant colours that can be achieved through dyeing British wool yarn with responsibly foraged, home grown plants and food waste.

After an introductory talk where Ria will discuss yarn preparation, mordanting, and an overview of the dyes that are available, Ria will dye a variety of weights of British wool yarn, ranging from super chunky to Ria’s bespoke 4ply weight yarn spun from Mendip sheep. This will show you the ways in which yarn type and breed of sheep behave differently in the dye bath. We will also look at the different ways natural dyes can be applied to yarn to create striking effects.

The workshop, which costs just £30, will be delivered live via Zoom over two sessions, but will be recorded and made available to watch again. If you cannot make any of the live sessions, you will be sent a link to the recording, and be able to ask questions via email.

The two sessions are as follows:

1. Live introduction and demonstration - Thursday 10th September - 4-6pm (BST) - with plenty of room to discuss and ask questions

2. Follow-up discussion - Thursday 24th September - 4-5pm (BST) - to reflect, and share your experiences and projects using the skills learnt on the workshop

You will also be sent a document explaining the dyeing process, and a further reading list. A Facebook group will be set up for students to use as a discussion and sharing forum.

In advance of the workshop you will be given the details of the dye stuffs that will be used in the workshop, so you can start gathering your own, should you wish to dye along with the workshop.
