'Reflect - A Ray of Hope' first U.K. screening

Sun, 13/01/2019

100 people. One kilometer. One border. One sun.

Reflect – A Ray of Hope documents the creation of a human art installation on the USA/Mexico border promoting peace, tolerance and unity, by Bristol artists Duncan McKellar and David Martin.

When Donald Trump was elected President of the United States using an election promise to build a new and heavy fortified wall along the USA / Mexico border, the artists had an idea. It was an idea that would take them all the way to the border towns of Douglas, Arizona and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico in January 2018 to stage an audacious art event that aimed to demonstrate the power of people working together, using something that we all share, wherever we live in the world: the sun. It was an idea that would eventually lead them to Washington DC.

Reflect featured 50 Americans and 50 Mexicans standing together as one, in a perfectly straight line stretching for one kilometre. Participants wore mirrored masks that in the desert sun flashed a pathway of light across the wall. Two countries, a stunning moment of togetherness and a defiant challenge to those whose aim is to divide us, wherever we live, at one of the most iconic and politically toxic dividing lines of them all.

Doors 6pm, screening (30 mins) starts promptly at 7pm with Q&A with artists following.
