Following our previous, rather scandalous excursion into Sargent’s world with Madame X (1884), I thought we should stay with Sargent… but turn the tables and put the spotlight on the man himself.
Dr Pozzi at Home is Sargent at his most dramatic — a striking portrait of the celebrated French gynaecologist and surgeon Dr Samuel-Jean Pozzi, swathed in a magnificent crimson dressing gown and surrounded by rich, theatrical interiors.
It’s flamboyant. It’s elegant. It’s slightly decadent.
And, of course, there is SO much to learn from Sargent’s handling of colour, fabric, flesh, edges and that incredible sense of painterly bravura.
So… shall we get our brushes out and step into Sargent’s world once again after our scandalous affair with the seductive Madame X?
