Our individual and collective sense of cultural identity informs many areas of our lives, including how we make textiles. 'Textile Identities', the third Textile Forum South West conference, explores the impact of cultural and personal experiences on textile practice.
Conference speakers include Helen David, Rezia Wahid, Jane Atkinson and Paddy Hartley, for whom textiles communicate cultural and personal histories. David is the founder of ‘English Eccentrics' and designed a diverse range of printed textiles for fashion, including fabrics such as ‘Peace Women’ based on the CND camp at Greenham Common and ‘Bulls & Bears’ inspired by the stock market. Air, peace and tranquillity: words that are part of Islam and Islamic art and architecture, all influence Wahid's weaving. Atkinson's contemporary lace draws on personal family experiences, whilst Hartley's work communicates the personal stories of injured WW1 servicemen through articulating textile sculptures.
The conference will be held at the Somerset Centre For Enterprise, Taunton
