Call for Applications: Craft Council's Hothouse

Applications are invited for Hothouse - the Crafts Council's new support programme for makers in the early stages of setting up a practice. Hothouse provides emerging makers, within two years of setting up a practice, with a programme of focussed, intensive business skills and creative development.  This first programme will run from June to October 2010 on a part-time basis. It will prepare makers to move forward with their practices and to take the first steps towards developing sustainable and thriving businesses. This will be delivered through a combination of scheduled structured sessions and workshops, with 1:1 support from a dedicated coach, a range of mentors and access to peer buddy.

Hothouse 1 will be delivered by the Crafts Council in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham (UCA), the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham Maltings and the New Ashgate Gallery. Activities will take place in Farnham, Surrey over the period June to October 2010.  Hothouse is open to makers based in the UK, but all events for this first Hothouse will take place in Farnham, Surrey.  Closing date for applications is Wednesday 21 April 2010.

Hothouse will provide new makers with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Understand a creative practice as a business and be able to set business goals
  • Build a professional development plan and understand the sequential steps needed to take this forward
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks in relation to those goals
  • Gain confidence in presenting and profiling themselves and their practice
  • Source and use appropriate networks and opportunities
  • Develop an understanding of potential markets and how to develop products or bodies of work in relation to these potential markets

Applications must be received at the Crafts Council, together with a CD of images, by Wednesday 21st April, 2010.

Hothouse is a strand of Crafts Council Collective, a new programme of CPD for makers. This first cohort is delivered by the Crafts Council and University of the Creative Arts in association with the Crafts Study Centre, Farnham Maltings and the New Ashgate Gallery.  Visit Hothouse to download application details and for more information.
