Red, Yellow, Blue - The Turn of Yellow

Tue, 15/02/2011 - Sun, 29/05/2011

Hot on the heels of Red, Jamaica Street Artists eclectic group of illustrators will be re-hanging the exhibition Red, Yellow, Blue, with new work inspired by the colour yellow, flooding the walls of the venue’s Crypt Bar with light, providing an optimistic start to 2011.

With each new stage of the exhibition the illustrators will interpret a new primary colour, in their own distinct style, paying homage to this iconic triptych. Illustration traditionally defines, exemplifies or clarifies, condensing a multitude of ideas, narratives and associations into one cohesive element. The simplicity and minimalism of this theme creates a platform from which each illustrator can explore outwards. Rather than reducing an idea they are expanding upon it, creating a highly diverse array of work.

In Yellow Abigail McDougall’s local landscapes are illuminated by subtle changes in light with rivers dappled in light soaked reflections and streets bathed in the fading yellow light of the summer sun. Serena Curmi and Teresa Murfin have both used the striking boldness of the primary colours to draw attention to characters in their playful illustrations, emphasizing the wistful and whimsical elements of their design. RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibitor Hannah McVicar uses colour to bring to life our horticultural heritage where as Leah Heming evokes a misleading childlike innocence in her humorous creations, demonstrating the exhibitions multi-generational appeal.

Please note the exhibition is open to St George’s visitors and members of the public, providing an extra enticement for concertgoers and visitors to arrive early and visit The Crypt Bar.

Exhibiting artists also includes Bjorn Lie, Emma Dibben, Rose Sanderson, Tom Mead and Chris Wright.

Red, Yellow, Blue runs August 2010 to September 2011, The Crypt Bar, St George’s, Great George Street, Off Park Street, Bristol, BS1 5RR

Jamaica Street Studios, a landmark to the Stokes Croft area of Bristol, is one of the largest artist led studios outside London, an active and vibrant home to numerous artists, illustrators painters, photographers, film-makers, embroiderers and sculptors for over 20 years.

The JSA's eclectic group of illustrators return to St George's with the exhibition 'Red, Yellow, Blue'. This year-long revolving show evolves with St George's tri-annual programme, presenting a unique twist on each colour throughout the year.

Traditionally illustration is associated with the act of distinction; therefore each period the exhibiting illustrators interpret a new primary colour, in their own distinct style, paying homage to this formidable triptych. Starting with 'Red', the thematic simplicity of this minimalist colour palette creates an exciting platform for creativity and diversity, following in the historic footsteps of artistic giants Mondrian, Richter and Newman.

This inventive exhibition highlights a wealth of emerging talent, whilst also promising familiar faces: with Emma Dibben's mouth-watering morsels and Rose Sanderson's weird and wonderful creations; fantastical flights of fancy from children's illustrators Serena Curmi and Teresa Murfin; humorous outings from Leah Heming and Bjorn Rune Lie; horticultural heritage from Hannah McVicar; luminous vistas from Abigail McDougall; and the dark and surreal from newcomer Tom Mead.

The three-part nature of this exhibition guarantees an unravelling year of surprises for new and returning visitors to St George's, creating a dynamic yet harmonious visual treat inspired by the grandeur of this atmospheric venue.
