Introducing the Didgeridoo!

Sat, 15/05/2010

Bristol Didg Club invites you to a FREE evening devoted to the mysteries and delights of the didgeridoo.  On Saturday 15th May at the Pierian Centre expert players will unfold the rich history and sounds of one of man’s oldest instruments.  They’ll even teach you how to produce your own magical and unearthly sounds!

The didgeridoo looks like the most primitive of instruments – but its subtleties take a lifetime to master.  Rock paintings in the Northern Territory show that the Aboriginal people of Kakadu have been using the didgeridoo for at least 1500 years – and probably an awful lot longer.  The instrument is traditionally made from Eucalyptus trees that have been hollowed out by termites to produce an irregular and tapering diameter.  The bark is taken off, the surface is shaped and often decorated – and then traditional makers apply a mouthpiece of wild beeswax.

Bristol Didg Club will describe the background to the didgeridoo and demonstrate different techniques and styles of playing.  This will include solos by club members as well as demonstrations of the didge playing alongside other world instruments.  The evening will include a short lesson enabling everyone in the audience to master the basic drone.

The evening is free – but booking is essential on info@pieriancentre.comor 0117 924 4512.  Donations on the door will go the Pierian Centre – and refreshments will be available.  The Pierian Centre is at 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA.  And further information about Bristol Didg Club can be found at http://www.bristoldidge.co.uk/
