Jamaica Street Artists represents a diverse collective of cutting edge fine artists, illustrators, photographers, animators, textile artists and film makers. It is one of the largest artist-led studios outside of London and has been established for over 15 years, housed in a grade ii listed former carriage works, an iconic landmark in Stokes Croft, Bristol.
The studio’s ethos is to recruit new graduates alongside established artists ensuring that Jamaica Street Artists support emerging creative talent from the region. The success of this environment is demonstrated through their artists’ diverse achievements, with individuals regularly exhibiting across the UK and abroad, achieving success in national competitions and prizes, and winning exciting new commissions and clients.
As an organisation JSA are members of the National Federation of Artists Studio Providers and aim to offer artists assistance with marketing, links to work opportunities, shared resources, informal mentoring and peer support. They also promote artists exhibitions and events through a website, social networking and an online newsletter. JSA encourage artists to become involved in the organisation of the studio and events, helping to maintain a vibrant energy.
Jamaica Street Artists is a unique and ambitious collective, holding an annual Open Studio and exciting exhibitions programme. Events include a successful exhibition and auction at The City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, 2009, a year long show at St George's, Bristol; ' Red, Yellow, Blue', 2010-2011, pop-up shop The Art Box, Bristol, 2010 and Inside-Out, Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, 2011. Jamaica Street Artists plan to build on this success, continuing to promote the individual efforts of its artists and contributing to Bristol's creative and cultural reputation.
